Anti Aging Nutrition
anti aging nutrition - Oxidative Stress and Anti Oxidants.
Free Radicals.
A free radical is an unstable molecule with an unpaired electron that runs astray, puncturing cell membranes, weakening arteries and attacking DNA in a desperate attempt to steal an electron. Free radicals occur naturally as cells burn food for energy in a process called oxidative stress. They are are also generated by UV radiation, pollutants from our environment, food additives, damaged oils, alcohol, and the big offender, cigarettes.
anti aging nutrition is about removing exosure to processed and “dead” foods and eating anti-oxidant rich foods.
Oxidative Stress
Oxidative stress is when we have an excess of free radical generators. Oxidative stress is a major cause of premature death today. Oxidative stress is most damaging at the cellular level where the cell membrane becomes less able of delivering nutrients and of waste removal.
Anti Oxidants
Anti oxidants are the protective force we need to suppress the free radicals. These free radicals damage the mitochondria (an organelle found in large numbers in most cells, in which the biochemical processes of respiration and energy production occur) deplete enzymes and alter DNA, the precursor of cancer. Oxidative stress is also a key link to heart disease.
LDL, the commonly called bad cholesterol is a blood fat that only becomes a problem when subjected to oxidative stress. When LDL has become oxidised, or given up an electron to a free radical, it hardens and clogs up the arteries, paving the way for strokes and heart attacks.
AntiOxidant Strategies and Replenishing Antioxidants.
Replenishing this important antioxidants can be achieved in three ways.
- Consuming anti-oxidant rich foods is essential in fighting free radicals and for anti aging nutrition.
- Taking supplements that are anti-oxidant based and that contain the essential nutrients.
- Propping up and supporting antioxidant enzyme systems. (Most enzymes are proteins with large complex molecules whose action depends on their particular molecular shape. Some enzymes control reactions within cells and some, such as the enzymes involved in digestion, outside them.)
